Cancer walk raises over $200,000

The goal was $190,000, and as of Monday night, $200,123 had been raised in LACiNg Up for Cancer, the annual fundraising walk hosted by the Lamoille Area Cancer Network.

Donations usually continue to pour in for several weeks.

“It was nice to see how many families — especially the young families — came out for the event this year,” said Kathy Demars, one of the organizers. “It’s such a local, grassroots event, and people just give it everything they’ve got.”

Since it was established in 2000, the Lamoille Area Cancer Network has given over $2 million in grants to people in the Lamoille region who are battling cancer and need help getting to or paying for treatments.

This year, 102 teams took to the Peoples Academy track on June 24 and surpassed last year’s record of $192,000.

The teams lined up pledges for every lap they walked, and one participant made it her goal to continue around the track for the entire 12-hour event. By the end of the event, she had ambled an estimated 40 miles.
